And so a few days have passed and the real aftermath of Global Game Jam 2014 is upon us. Since our previous post Dan is awaiting results regarding an official Richter rating for his snoring; Adrian has successfully had his Teemo hat surgically removed and in global news - close friends, Sasquatch and Nessie, have refused to comment on the validity of photographic evidence released of the lesser- spotted ‘smiling’ Michael. Many thanks must go to Windmill Lane Recording Studios, Pulse College and- especially their head of Games and Animation- John Healy, for a well organised weekend. It was an excellent event, one in which we learned so much about game development, about ourselves and about each other. Despite all that we are still communicating, but now most our communication is via squinty and shifty eyed stares. And as for our maiden game jam, we gloriously managed to turn a 48 hour game jam into a 15 hour jam. As mentioned in our previous post our first concept was a tad ambitious, resulting in an Inception approach......a confused first half to the jam, a rather bemusing third quarter and an interesting, but inconclusive, end section in which nobody knows was it a dream or did the girl from Beyond Two Souls really go on to become an amazing architect? Anyway, and this may be somehow linked to sleep deprivation, we are still attempting to contact the Asian business man who turned up, speaking incoherent English, who gave us our first concept for the jam... ....a camera within a camera, within a camera. Seriously, we kid you not! And now we get back to the daily grind of progressing our current workload, and, in addition, seek to place our game jam concept into our work schedule....oh, and let’s not forget our C*ndy (trademark pending!) game concept - in reference to the ridiculous trademark application by mobile games giant Cong.kim I’l su (or some name like that). We’ll describe this game concept in another post in the not too distant future. Much work ahead, but the game jam has given us a nice little boost in confidence! And fyi...we will not be trade marking ‘Circumvolution’! *= a Global Game jam 2014 - Game screen shot We did it! We survived and completed a 48 hour Game Jam. It was a great experience all round, from the mini tournaments (which our very own Adrian won), free food and got to play some very innovative games with some very smart and nice creators. We had gone through about 3 ideas before finally starting work on the final idea with just 15 hours left to go. I must say it was a roller coaster. During the first day of the jam we experimented with something rather unique where we would use 4 camera's to view a different world for both players and a 3rd when the 2 characters come very close. We came so close to getting it to work but realised that we would of needed more than the allotted time given to complete and we wanted to have a game up for all of you to play. So after saving that idea for future use we started again found a mix between our finished game and current but came across OnTriggerEnter problems due to a code where we scale the players dynamically. So then finally we arrived on our current idea where each player has a reality to play in and share with the other player. The catch is the control to who is playing needs to be handled by the players and this is where I personally think we made a great little co-op game. We also experimented with the idea of fading realities which each player see's so in some cases the white cube would have to explore the world and find platforms for the black cube to use to trigger an event such as a switch. The link of our Global Game Jam entry will be live on site Asap so hold on and we hope you enjoy our efforts. We leave filled with great ideas for future games and some new contacts. We will be doing a more polished version and iron out the bugs for the site. We would also like to extend our thanks to Glenn Byrne(with a name like that he should join us ;) ) for coming in and helping us with some of the visuals. He is amazingly talented and we wish him all the best and hope to work with him again in the future. If any one would like any visual/illustrations done feel free to mail him. https://www.facebook.com/glenn.byrne |
